NACH SPANDAU, 52mins, 2008

Nach Spandau was filmed at night over a period of a few months on the U7 U-bahn line in Berlin. Most of the U7 ( as well as several stations on other lines) was designed by Rainer G Rummler, Architectural Engineer for the BVG from the early 1960s til his retirement in the the mid 1990s.  The line was built on the west side of the wall to transport workers from the residential areas in the south east to the industrial north west and the out-lying Spandau, without crossing into East Berlin. Rummler's entire architectural oevre exists underground as a string of pearls; a chain of highly decorated caves populated during the day by busy commuters and by night by the sleepless vagabonds of the city and the staring models in the advertising campaigns which line the walls.
